Introduction :

Alkananda Guest House is well within walking distance from Kalimpong town and is located in a quiet, clean and exclusive residential area. Its serene atmosphere and the warm hospitality of’ the staff gives the guest house a unique ambience.

The places of interest in and around Alkananda guest house are -

Crookety House where Helena Roerich, a Russian herbalogist and healer came to live with her son Yuri, the Director of the "Uruswati" Himalayan Research Institute in the year 1947 till her death on 5th April 1955. Helena was the wife of the celebrated Nicholas Roerich, the great Russian Artist, Philosopher and writer. Helena wrote a number of books including Agni Yoga.

Her two sons Yuri and Svyatoslav purchased some land on top of Durprin Hill and built a Stupa in her memory. The Durpin Monastry was constructed next to stupa in the year 1970. The Monastry Library contains copies of the published wrtings of Helana that were donated by the Agni Yoga Society in New York. Svyatoslav was maried to Devika Rani, the first lady of silver screen and grandniece of Noble Laureate Rabindranath Tagore.

Gauripur House Kalimpong was one the favourite places of poet Rabindranath Tagore. Whenever he visited Kalimpong he stayed at Gauripur House. On 25th April 1940 he recited from this house, the poem, "Janamdin" through a telephone . It was broadcasted live. He wrote many poems when he was residing in this house. He left this house on 28th September 1954 never to return.

Pine View Nursery where one can see beautiful collection of cactii from all over the World. It is a must visit place.

Next to Pine view is Kali Mandir, the temple to Goddess Kali.

Forest Museum gives knowledge regarding the plants and animals of the hills. It imparts knowledge on the impact of the deforestation and how the electricity is generated.

Macfarlane Memorial Church: This imposing Gothic edifice built on a hill is visible from many parts of Kalimpong town. The foundation stone was laid on 24th February 1890 by Dr. Herdman of Melrose. Twenty months later, the church was opened its door for public worship on 1st November 1891.

This church is built in the memory of Reverend William Macfarlane. He was a scottish missionary who came to live in Kalimpong in 1879. He died on 15th February 1887 at the age of 47.

Dharmodaya Vihar: The Nepalese Buddhists have a temple - the Dharmodaya Vihar which is close to Novelty Cinema Hall, Kalimpong. The Dharmodaya Vihar is the residence of the Nepalese Bhuddist monks. There is a library and a reading room where books on Bhuddism and others in Nepali, English, Hindi, Bengali and Pali language are kept. The idol of Buddha inside the temple was presented by Bhuddists of Burma(Myanmar).

Rafting: We also arrange rafting and there are many more thins to see and enjoy for which one has to come and explore.

The rooms are well furnished, bright and airy and hot and cold running water is available in all bathrooms. On clear days, the view of the Kanchenjunga range from the guest house is truly breath taking.
